University of Sydney (2025)
A study using OVR scent technology in a multisensory virtual environment found measurable improvements in participant wellbeing when scent was added. Participants reported that the sense of smell actively helped them forget about the real world and focus on the virtual space — a quality that visual and auditory cues alone could not achieve.
The Science
Smell is the only sense with a direct connection to the limbic system — the part of the brain responsible for emotion and memory.
Every other sense (sight, sound, touch) routes through the thalamus before reaching the limbic system. Scent bypasses that step entirely, which is why a smell can trigger a vivid memory or a strong emotional response instantly — faster and more powerfully than any other input.
